What Air Duct Cleaning Actually Removes from Your System

Air duct cleaning gets talked about a lot, but very few homeowners have actually seen what comes out of their own ductwork. This guide covers what genuinely accumulates inside a residential duct system in Jacksonville, how it gets there, and what a professional cleaning does and does not remove.

What actually builds up inside ductwork

Your HVAC system moves air through every room in the house, and whatever is loose in that air eventually passes through the ducts. Some of it keeps moving. The rest settles on the inside wall of the duct, in the bottom of the return boot, and on the blower wheel, where it stays until something removes it.

The material we pull out of a typical Jacksonville home falls into a few predictable categories:

Household dust and fine grit from daily living
Pet hair and dander, by far the biggest single contributor in homes with animals
Pollen and outdoor debris drawn in through returns and open windows
Drywall dust, sawdust and insulation fibers left behind by construction or a renovation
Lint, carpet fibers and fabric particles
In older systems, pieces of the duct insulation itself as the liner degrades

Why it collects faster in Florida

Two things make Northeast Florida different. Cooling season runs most of the year, so the blower simply logs more hours than it would further north, and every hour of run time is more air pulled across the coil and into the branches. Humidity is the second factor: damp surfaces inside the system hold onto fine particles that would otherwise pass straight through, which is why the first few feet off the plenum are usually the dirtiest part of the run.

What a professional cleaning removes

A proper cleaning is mechanical. Brushes and compressed-air tools dislodge the material stuck to the duct wall while a vacuum under negative pressure collects it, so the debris leaves the building instead of being pushed into the rooms. The work covers the supply runs, the return runs, the plenum and the blower compartment, not just the few inches visible behind each register.

At E.R HVAC we photograph the inside of the runs before and after, so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.

What it does not do

Duct cleaning is not a repair. It will not seal a disconnected joint, straighten a crushed flex run, or fix a system that is undersized for the house. If we find damage while we are in there, we will show you the photo and tell you plainly that it needs duct repair rather than another cleaning. It is also not a substitute for changing your filter on schedule.

When it is worth booking

There is no single interval that suits every house. The practical signals are:

Dust returning to surfaces within days of cleaning
Visible debris around the supply registers or inside the return grille
Noticeably weaker airflow from one or more vents
A recent renovation, or a newly built home still carrying construction debris
Pets that shed heavily
A musty or stale odor when the system first kicks on

If none of those apply, we would rather inspect, show you a clean duct, and tell you to spend the money elsewhere.

FAQs – Air Duct Cleaning and Household Dust

How often should ducts be cleaned?
Every 3–5 years suits most Jacksonville homes, sooner with pets, recent construction, or visible dust around the vents. We inspect before quoting.

Will cleaning reduce the dust in my house?
It removes the dust and debris sitting inside the duct system, so the blower stops redistributing it. Dust that enters from doors, windows and daily activity is unaffected.

How long does it take?
Most single-system homes take a few hours, depending on the number of registers and how accessible the air handler is.

Do you show what came out?
Yes. Before and after photos of the inside of the runs are part of every job, along with a walkthrough of anything we noticed and did not touch.
