HVAC Jacksonville FL: How UV Light Installation Helps Keep Your HVAC System Clean

In humid cities like Jacksonville, FL, air conditioners run long hours and their coils stay damp for much of the year. UV light installation is one of the add-ons homeowners ask us about most. Here is a plain-language look at how HVAC UV lights work, what they are designed to do, what they don’t do, and how they fit with regular cleaning.

What Is an HVAC UV Light?

An HVAC UV light is a lamp that gives off ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light. It is mounted inside the air handler, usually aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan. UV-C is the wavelength range used in germicidal lamps. It can damage the genetic material of microorganisms on the surfaces it reaches, which is why these lamps are used to help limit microbial buildup on HVAC system coils.

Common Types of HVAC UV Lights

  • Coil-mounted (stick) lamps: installed so the light shines on the evaporator coil and drain pan continuously. This is the most common type for homes.
  • Air-stream lamps: installed where air passes by on the return or supply side. Air moves past the lamp quickly, so exposure time is short, and these are mainly a complement to coil-mounted lamps.

We recommend a lamp based on your air handler’s layout, the space available, and the manufacturer’s instructions.

What UV Lights Are Designed to Do

  • Help reduce microbial buildup on the coil and drain pan surfaces the light reaches.
  • Help keep the coil cleaner between service visits. A clean coil exchanges heat more efficiently, so your system doesn’t have to run as long.
  • Help reduce odors that come from buildup on the coil.

What UV Lights Don’t Do

  • They don’t replace cleaning. UV-C works only on surfaces it can reach, and a layer of dust blocks it. Dirty coils and ducts still need to be cleaned.
  • They don’t fix moisture problems. Leaks, clogged drain lines, and high indoor humidity need to be corrected on their own.
  • They aren’t a medical device. We make no health claims, and results vary with each system and home.

Is a UV Light Worth It in Jacksonville?

It depends on your system and your goals. Jacksonville’s humid climate keeps coils wet for much of the year, so many of our customers add a UV light right after an HVAC cleaning to help the coil stay cleaner longer. If your system is due for cleaning, start there. A UV light works best on a clean coil.

Installation and Maintenance

  • Placement: the lamp is positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions so it reaches the coil and drain pan.
  • Bulb replacement: UV-C output drops over time, so bulbs need replacing on the schedule the manufacturer specifies, often about once a year.
  • Safety: UV-C light can harm eyes and skin. The lamp is mounted inside the closed unit. Never look at a lit lamp, and turn off power before opening the panel. Many models include a door safety switch.
  • Materials: some plastics and wire insulation can wear out under long UV-C exposure, so installers position or shield the lamp to protect nearby parts.

Pair UV With Cleaning and Humidity Control

For the best results, combine a UV light with regular HVAC cleaning, filter changes every 1–3 months, a clear condensate line, and indoor humidity below 60% (ideally 30–50%, as the U.S. EPA recommends). Important

We do not provide microbial assessment or remediation services; if you suspect a growth problem, contact a Florida-licensed assessor. UV lights and our cleaning services are maintenance measures for HVAC equipment. They are not medical treatments, and results vary with each home’s conditions.
